The City of Bushnell’s electric rates are at their lowest point since May 2009, having dropped 24.4%!
The cost of energy represents a substantial portion of a household's budget. Lowering rates helps everyone keep more money in their pockets in these tough times.
“We’re delighted our rates are lower,” said Vince Ruano, City Manager for the City of Bushnell. “Our locally owned electric utility is committed to providing our community efficient, safe and reliable electricity at a reasonable cost.”
In the past decade, natural gas prices were extremely high, creating a negative impact on the economy. According to Barry Moline, Executive Director of the Florida Municipal Electric Association, “The economic downturn across our country triggered a drop in electric demand, causing fuel prices to fall. In addition, we’ve secured more natural gas supply, which has increased the amount of fuel available. The resulting price drop is great news for consumers.”

City of Bushnell Downtown Renovation, Sidewalk & Bike Path and Drainage Projects Have Begun!
Written by sitemanagerCITIZEN PROGRESS REPORTS:
CONSTRUCTION HAS STARTED!
The construction of the downtown park area near Bushnell Plaza began on the morning of January 5th, 2012. A silt fence was placed around the perimeter of the future park.
On the morning of January 6th, 2012, the contractors began to remove the trees. There were a lot of mixed emotions regarding this aspect of the project. Months before construction began, various City staff examined the large live oak in the center of the downtown area and believed that the tree was unhealthy. The City wanted to keep the tree in place, however, with the future of our citizens' safety in mind, the City decided to have the tree removed.
The City feared that the tree would fall on the newly constructed park or possibly injure someone with falling debris. If this were to occur, it would be an expensive repair bill to the taxpayers, or worse if someone were to get hurt. The City's fears were confirmed once the tree was removed. The large live oak was rotten and diseased. The construction supervisor for QGS Developement, Shannon Sherrill, stated that the tree would not have lasted more than two years before experiencing some problems. Although the tree is gone, more trees will be planted to enhance the beauty of the downtown area.
DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENTS
Before Art Walker begins construction on the drainage improvements in the downtown area, there will be a meeting with all of the Business owners. The meeting will be held at the Bushnell City Hall council chambers. The City is hopeful that the drainage improvements will solve the flooding problems that the businesses along Bushnell Plaza have had in the past, and this project will be of no cost to the business owners. Once the contractor receives notification from the railroad on a required permit, he can set the construction date, and the meeting date will happen before the first shovel hits the dirt. The City will make sure to keep all businesses along the Plaza up to date with meeting information.
HAVE YOU NOTICED THE FLAGS IN THE GROUND ALL AROUND TOWN?
Throughout the construction process you will see flags around town that mark locates for the bike path and sidewalks that are to be constructed. It is important not to disturb these flags. They are there so that construction crews can avoid important underground lines, therefore, avoiding an interruption in your cable service, telephone service and other utilities services. Please do not pull up any of these flags, and report anyone you might see doing so. Any lines cut will only delay the construction, and ultimately add costs to the completion of the jobs.

The City of Bushnell held the 7th annual "Grant a Christmas Wish" program this year. The Children's Home Society, who works with the Florida Department of Children and Families, provided the names of 50 children in need this Christmas season. This organization provides a safe harbor for children and helps to reverse crisis situations within family units. Children's Home Society provides treatment for developmentally disabled children, foster care, adoption, group homes, child abuse prevention, emergency shelters, and case management.
The Grant a Christmas Wish program was a huge success! The City was overwhelmed with the generosity of this community and the staff here at the City; there were so many wonderful toys and childrens' clothing brought in for the children. The citizens of the community came with bags of toys and open hearts, and this program resulted in providing Christmas gifts to over 70 children, not just the original 50 names on the tree.
The City of Bushnell would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who helped support the 2011 Grant a Christmas Wish program, and we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year!
